Oil relief meets AI hardware doubts

Falling crude lifted about seven in ten stocks while a handful of technology giants pulled the S&P 500 and Nasdaq lower on the eve of the midterms.

The Signal

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq reversed early gains and closed lower while the Dow rose. Crude fell about 7% on US-Iran diplomacy hopes, sinking every energy stock and lifting consumer, industrial and financial names. Technology was the only other sector down on average. Cash flowed into far more stocks than it left, though lower highs still outnumber higher highs.

The Noise

The headline reads like a risk-off day, but about 70% of stocks rose. The damage came from AI hardware after Marvell's all-stock deal for Lumentum, plus Microsoft, Apple and Nvidia. The open question is whether the fade into the close carries past the election.

Multi-Signal Confluence

J.B. Hunt: the freight carrier and the only top-tier name. A higher low with an improving volume pattern, but the trend is down, cash is leaving and fair value sits below the price. Solid growth, a mixed Dedicated business and a full multiple.

PACCAR: the truck maker is deeply oversold with an improving volume pattern and fair value about 13% above the price. Profit rose strongly, but supplier shortages hit deliveries and 2027 orders wait on emissions penalties.

AbbVie: the bearish counterpart. A strong quarter and raised guidance, but a higher high lacked volume confirmation, the stock runs hot, and Skyrizi's growth has slowed each quarter.

Week Ahead

Tuesday: midterm elections, Booking after the close. Wednesday: ISM services, consensus 54.8. Thursday: Devon and Targa earnings. Friday: October payrolls, consensus +65K and 4.2% unemployment.
