A Record Built on Six Names
The Nasdaq closed at a record on soft services data, but the ten-year hit a new 52-week high and most stocks are still in downtrends, so this is narrowing leadership, not broad strength.
The Signal
ISM services came in at 54.9 against a 55.7 consensus, the second soft US print in three sessions. The Nasdaq Composite closed at a record while the Dow is down about 4% over a month. The ten-year yield touched a 52-week high anyway. Selling still outweighs buying across the broad market, though the gap narrowed for a second day, and roughly three quarters of stocks remain in downtrends.
The Noise
The story the market tells is that soft data means a friendlier Fed and a green light for everything. The data disagrees: the long end keeps rising regardless, utilities have disappeared from the bullish side, and money is rotating toward financials and materials. A record close resting on a handful of mega-caps is narrowing, not breadth.
Multi-Signal Confluence
Church & Dwight (CHD): the cleanest bullish setup in the scan, with buyers returning just under a rising long-term trend line after a pullback from the June peak. Last quarter showed solid organic growth and a raised full-year outlook. Caveat: selling pressure has not fully faded and the price sits slightly above the model's fair value.
Targa Resources (TRGP): the strongest bullish candle pattern in the universe on a fresh higher low, with positive buying flow. Caveat: it trades well above the model's fair value and Q3 results around Oct 29 are expected to show lower earnings year over year.
CrowdStrike (CRWD): the bearish counterpart, a fresh higher high in overbought territory with a red selling read, fair value about 10% below price. Buying flow remains strong, so this is a stretch warning, not a broken story.
Week Ahead
Wednesday: minutes from the September Fed meeting. Friday: preliminary Michigan consumer sentiment, expected flat at 48.1. The following week: JPM and UNH on Oct 13, more banks through Oct 16, and September CPI on Oct 14.
