Oil Eases, Utilities Rotate In

The Fed's post-hike selloff reversed the next day as oil fell on signs of a faster Saudi pipeline restart and possible U.S.-Iran de-escalation, and the scan's real story is fresh money rotating into beaten-down utilities while quietly leaving the energy and tech names that benefited from the oil shock.

The Signal

The Federal Reserve raised rates a quarter point on Wednesday, its first hike since summer 2023 and a unanimous decision, with most officials projecting at least one more increase this year. Stocks sold off on the news, then reversed hard on Thursday as crude fell nearly two percent on signs Saudi Arabia is speeding up a pipeline restart to Asian refiners and on talk that the seven-month U.S.-Iran standoff may be nearing some resolution. The S&P closed up about one percent and chip stocks rose three percent on the relief.

The Noise

The index sits only a couple percent off its high, but that is a handful of mega-caps carrying the tape: most stocks in the scan remain in confirmed downtrends and broad money flow is running roughly seventy percent sell versus thirty percent buy. What changed today is the composition underneath. Every fresh bullish money-flow signal in utilities fired in the same session, while fresh bearish signals clustered almost entirely in energy and tech hardware — a rotation out of the oil shock's winners and into its rate-sensitive victims, not a broad reversal.

Multi-Signal Confluence

CMS Energy shows the cleanest expression of the utility rotation: a fresh multi-week low with every signal the scan tracks agreeing on a bullish read, daily and weekly, at one of the deepest discounts to trend in the scan. The company just completed a strategic review, exiting its non-utility renewable-development business for roughly $500 million and targeting nearly all future earnings from regulated utility operations by 2027 — a simpler, lower-risk profile the market tends to reward once yields stop climbing. The catch is that this only works if yields actually roll over; the Fed has promised another hike, and a hot inflation print next Friday could send a name at a fresh low lower still.

Phillips 66 sits on the other side of the same rotation, roughly twenty-eight percent above its trend target after more than doubling this year on refining margins that spiked over fifty percent during the oil shock, with analysts raising price targets sharply in recent weeks. The tension is that those margins are now reversing as the Saudi pipeline restart brings cheaper crude back into the system, and analyst upgrades chasing a big move can be confirming a story that is ending rather than starting. A smaller but related case sits in Gartner, which shows the same distribution pattern — a fresh negative money-flow signal near a high — despite a business that just beat estimates and raised guidance, with at least one research shop still cutting its price target.
